Chat and Patch: How do you say the word ‘periods’ in your language?

Our latest project ‘Periods in Your Language‘ tackles menstrual stigma in UK-South Asian communities through intergenerational quilt-making workshops in London and Sheffield. An interactive sound e-quilt and short film will share stories, languages, and resources on intergenerational, cultural dialogue within period education.

A simple question with a complex answer…
We ran workshops in London and Sheffield where participants explored the word ‘period’ across languages and cultures. Through typography warm-ups, shared conversations and multilingual recordings, each person created a quilt square that visualised their chosen word and told the personal story behind it.

CHAT AND PATCH
We made an interactive quilt!
An interactive quilt stitched by intergenerational South Asian participants, each panel revealing the word ‘periods’ in their language with recorded stories activated by touch.

What we’ve done so far
The Red Cloud Project began as our design fellowship with the Rights Studio at CRIN, where we were encouraged to explore how art can support activism.
What started as a deep dive into period poverty grew into an educational, conversation-starting book for young people – blending facts, cultural perspectives, personal stories and reflective activities.
Since then, Red Cloud Project has grown beyond the fellowship and now sits as the name for all of our period-activism work, helping us continue to open up honest, stigma-breaking conversations about menstrual health. Check-out what we’ve been up to since 2020!

Workshops, Talks, Events
We talk about our work in many public-facing events to raise further awareness
From Your Big Sisters: check out our book launched in 2020 with CRIN and The Rights Studio!

“Ricebox Studios, periods in your language, have created such a cool environment for inter-generational conversations. As a South Asian growing up, this wasn’t something we really had. Absolutely smashing taboos.”
